In this video tutorial I am chatting about beginners crochet chain stitch and slip knot. If you are new to crochet these are the very basic stitches that you will need to learn and master. Don’t be daunted though as they are easy to achieve with a little practice.
I always think that it is easier to learn with visual help so I have added this tutorial into a YouTube video. You can watch as many times as you need. It’s also good to refer to now and then just to refresh if needed.
It is pitched at the basic level so there is nothing too complicated to learn. It can seem very daunting when you first pick up a crochet hook but as I always say, practice does make perfect. You will easily master the crochet chain stitch and slip knot when you watch my video tutorials. I show you how in an easy step by step pace.
Chain Stitch
The chain stitch is obviously the first and most important crochet stitch to learn. It is simply a foundation for the rest of your crochet project. So depending on the length of your crochet chain will determine your project size.
Obviously there are times when you will increase your stitches to create shaping and sizing but initially the number of chains you begin with is the starting point. It is therefore important that when you create your chain you double check the number that you are required to do before you continue. It is also important to check the required number of chains especially if you are going to follow a pattern. Aside from this once you have mastered this simple stitch you will be keen to learn lots more.
Slip Knot
Also the slip knot is just a simple way of anchoring or tying your work to your hook before you begin any crochet project. There are a number of methods for making your slip knot but all result in the same effect.

What Tools Do I Need?
To start with I would recommend a good 4mm hook and some DK (double knit) yarn. This is a good size hook for beginners and the yarn weight is also easy to manage. I wouldn’t try anything smaller until you are more confident with your crochet.
I love my Tulip Etimo Crochet Hook because it has a lovely cushioned grip handle. This is important if you intend to do a lot of crochet, which I do! It is not the cheapest of hooks so if you are unsure on what to buy then I would recommend this hook ….. The Pony Easy Grip Crochet Hook which is a good value hook.
What Yarn Will I need?
You can use any DK yarn but again I would only use an inexpensive acrylic yarn to begin with. As when you are learning you will find yourself in knots and tangles and you wouldn’t want to spoil anything expensive. Don’t worry though you WILL get better in time. Then you will be spoilt for choice when deciding on what yarn to choose for your next project.
I always have Stylecraft Special DK yarn in my wool basket as its an amazing inexpensive yarn with over 80 different shades to choose and each ball is 100gms with 322 yards. So you get a lot of yarn for your money and is perfect for practicing with.
Whatever yarn or hook you choose just remember crochet is fun. Once you have learnt the basic stitches you will grow in confidence. You will be itching to grab a pattern and create for yourself.
