I am so passionate about designing and drafting my own patterns, it is definitely the side of dressmaking that I love the most! As soon as I have an idea of what I want to create in my head, I know that I can bring it to life in a sewing pattern. Mind you it does take time and is quite a long drawn-out task, but I don’t mind any of that as it’s just part of the process!
When I designed The Dixie Dress sewing pattern, it started out as a blouse, and originally it had a button placket down the back of the bodice. It was just too pretty a detail that I had to change it to be on the front instead. I then added the romantic style ruffle neckline and for the finishing touch, gathered cuff sleeves. From here I simply created a longer-length garment idea instead of the blouse, and it turned into a maxi style dress.
I thought that this would make an amazing sewing pattern on its own but I just wanted to add more options and give my customers good value for money.
I want all my PDF patterns to be versatile, adaptable and affordable. So with this in mind, I created two sleeve lengths, 2 skirt options, maxi, and smock length, and also the blouse option too.
Ruffle Neckline Design
I used the most delicious fabrics from Minerva ….. a vintage washed cotton for the maxi and smock length, it was a dream to sew with and just handles beautifully. I chose the Tan colour for the maxi and Khaki for the smock. There are 19 colours to choose from, so definitely a shade for everyone. The fabric is available here!
Smock Length Option
The Prettiest Blouse Option
For the blouse, I wanted to see what the drape would be like in a more floaty fabric, so I chose a viscose crepe in blush pink for my version. I was a little nervous about working with crepe, but again the quality of the fabric made sewing with it a dream. In fact, I really enjoyed making this drapy, romantic-style blouse! There are 30 colours to choose from, so the hardest part is deciding which one to choose! You can take a look at all the shades here!
The Dixie Dress & Blouse is a loose-fitting style and is available in sizes XS-2XL, which covers a size range of 6-22. Learn skills such as adding ruffles, button plackets, inserting elastic and adding bias trim. There is a comprehensive written instruction booklet to help you from start to finish.
